Mission Statement

Every student, regardless of ethnic background, language, gender, or ability, will be educated to the upper limit of his or her intellectual potential.

All students will develop basic communication skills and problem-solving strategies and assume personal responsibility as citizens, workers and life-long learners. The excitement and challenge of learning and succeeding will permeate the Language Arts curriculum. Goals are clearly stated, and expectations are high.

Resources that support results-based "best practices" will be provided to facilitate the development of language arts skills. This will allow teachers to focus on students' cognitive development and individual learning styles.

Teachers will serve as instructors, mentors, motivators, and facilitators. Educators, parents, community members, and students will share in this educational process.

Philosophy

There are three levels of Language Arts: learning to communicate, communicating to learn, and using communication for life empowerment. Language Arts include the receptive skills of reading and listening, and the productive skills of writing and speaking.

We believe that an effective Language Arts program is an integral part of preparing all College Place School District students to become knowledgeable, discerning citizens capable of making decisions on personal, community, national and world issues.

Language Arts should expand personal knowledge and enhance individual satisfaction. The understanding and expression of language requires a set of complex strategies which provide the ability to comprehend at the literal, interpretive, evaluative, and creative levels. Strategies should be taught as tools for developing language arts proficiency in students' pursuit of educational and vocational opportunities in our rapidly changing technological society.

A variety of methods and materials is necessary to accommodate different needs and interests of students. Application of reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking strategies will be integrated throughout all subject areas.
